Reframing Normal: Disability, Dehumanisation, and Solidarity with Palestine

April 4 @ 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm

Makan and Diversity & Ability present: ‘Reframing Normal: Disability, Dehumanisation, and Solidarity with Palestine’. Join us as explore how disability and debility configure into the collective Palestinian experience, and how disability justice is at the core of Palestinian liberation, especially amidst the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Whether or not Palestinians self-identify as Disabled according to Western definitions, there is no doubt that all Palestinians, in Gaza and beyond, live under violent, debilitating conditions. Yet disability justice is rarely part of the mainstream conversation on Palestinian liberation. Equally, Western disability rights and inclusion frameworks don’t sufficiently meet the needs of the Palestinian people, often rendering conversations about Palestine and disability into depoliticised, humanitarian frameworks. In this context, what does useful, informed solidarity look like? How are decolonisation and disability justice related? What is a useful way to build frameworks and practices that anchor our understanding of Palestinian liberation in an anti-colonial disability politics?
