SUMMARY:How to Talk About Palestine Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Dorset PSC and Makan\, this two-part workshop offers both a deep foundation in understanding Palestine and practical tools for speaking about it with clarity and confidence. Reserve your free spot here. \nWorkshop 1 – Understanding the Palestinian Struggle\nWe begin by establishing core frameworks and concepts through which Palestine can be understood\, including settler-colonialism\, occupation\, apartheid\, the Nakba\, the peace process\, and more. Through a combination of historical overview and conceptual analysis\, participants gain a grounded\, critical understanding of the roots of the Palestinian cause\, its evolution\, and the narratives that surround it. \nWorkshop 2 – Skills for Challenging Conversations\nBuilding on this foundation\, the second workshop focuses on how to confidently navigate discussions about Palestine in public\, personal\, or professional settings. Participants will explore common arguments and misconceptions frequently seen in media and public discourse\, analyse how these narratives operate\, and develop effective strategies to respond to them.\nThis will be a supportive\, safe discussion space where participants learn from one another while building practical talking points and conversational skills. \nWho is this for?\nThese workshops are suitable for participants with foundational or advanced understanding of Palestine who want to deepen their knowledge\, strengthen their analysis\, and gain confidence in addressing mainstream narratives. \nDonations welcome \nThe workshop is free for a limited number of spaces. Donations are welcome on the day to help us cover costs.

SUMMARY:Settler Colonialism & Ecological Violence in Palestine Online (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this two-part workshop series exploring how we can situate Palestine in relation to the climate crisis and ecological violence. We encourage you to attend both workshops\, but you can also choose to attend only one. \nThis workshop aims to deepen understanding of settler colonialism as the driver of land and natural resource destruction in Palestine. The workshop will expand how we think of violence\,  and explore how settler colonialism both disrupts Indigenous people’s sovereignty over land as well as weaponises natural resources and ‘greenwashing’ to conceal settler violence. Through this\, the session will provide a strong foundation for understanding and articulating ecological violence in Palestine.   \nThis series builds on our previous lecture ‘Framing Palestine: Israel\, the Gulf\, and American Power in the Middle East’ with the Transnational Institute and Adam Hanieh\, to deepen our understanding of the themes presented there. The sessions prioritise interactivity and invite participants to engage in close reading of texts and images in group discussions\, and are interspersed with lecturing.  \nThis workshop is suitable for people who are involved in the climate justice movement and would like to learn more about how it applies to the context of Palestine\, and/or for people who are involved in the Palestinian liberation movement and would like to learn more about how climate justice is central to it. \nApply for your spot here

SUMMARY:Connecting Israel\, Imperialism & the Climate Crisis Online (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:This second part of the workshop series aims to deepen knowledge on imperialism as a framework to analyse the connection between Palestine and the climate crisis. The session will dive into the relationship between imperialism and resource extraction in Palestine and the wider Arab region. It will also touch upon other contexts to show how global imperialism aims to profit from over-consuming natural resources\, and how this both fuels the climate crisis and shapes the contemporary situation in Palestine today. SUMMARY:Genocide Inside & Outside of the Prison: A talk with Lena Meari & Basil Farraj on the Palestinian condition and Israel’s carceral regime (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Register your spot here \nPrisons are a focal site for understanding Palestine and the wider Palestinian condition. Imprisonment as a central tactic helps us see how Israel turns Palestinian land and lives into spaces to criminalise\, while using the prison itself as a space of brutal experimentation and extermination. \nIn the last few years\, numerous reports have emerged detailing the horrific treatment of imprisoned Palestinian children\, women and men. Imprisonment has been used as a long standing colonial British and Israeli strategy to break Palestinian bonds and capacity to overcome settler colonial violence and live in freedom and dignity\, but since the ongoing genocide in Gaza there is an escalation in the employment of violence\, particularly sexual violence\, turning prisons into a space to accelerate its genocide against the Palestinian people.  \nOur upcoming online conversation with Lena Meari and Basil Farraj will be unpacking the role of the colonial carceral regime\, the specificity of Israel as a carceral state and its shifting tactics within prisons\, how  gender and sexuality are deployed in prisons\, and the centrality of prisoners and sumud within the Palestinian struggle. \nAbout Lena Meari \nLena is an associate professor of cultural anthropology at the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Institute of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University\, Palestine. She received her PhD in Cultural Anthropology with a Designated Emphasis in Feminist Theory and Research from the University of California\, Davis. Her special interests lie in the geopolitics of knowledge production; subject formation in colonial contexts; de-colonial feminist theory and methodology; and formations of sumud in the Palestinian context. Her publications include “Sumud: A Palestinian Philosophy of Confrontation in Colonial Prisons”\, “Re-signifying `Sexual` Colonial Power Techniques: The Experiences of Palestinian Women Political Prisoners”\, and the co-edited books “Rethinking Gender in Revolutions and Resistance: Lessons from the Arab World” and “The Politics of Engaged Gender Research in the Arab Region”. \nAbout Basil Farraj \nBasil is the Director of the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies\, and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural studies\, Birzeit University. Basil’s research addresses the intersections of memory\, resistance\, and art by prisoners and others at the receiving end of violence. He has conducted research in several countries including Chile\, Colombia\, and Palestine. \nAbout Makan: \nMakan is an independent\, non-partisan organisation dedicated to interconnected learning. Our approach is grounded in a belief that education is a liberatory act that can lay the ground for structural change. Situating Palestine within the context of other human rights\, social justice and global liberation movements\, we work towards transformation by adopting educational approaches that capture the history of the Palestinian struggle and the realities on the ground. We aim to support advocates as part of a community that is not only well-informed\, interconnected\, and empowered\, but passionately committed to cultivating a future for Palestinians built on freedom\, justice\, and dignity.

If done effectively\, reparations have an essential role in decolonial processes. The Ongoing Nakba of the Palestinian people and the “post-apartheid” situation of South Africa offer an opportunity to reflect on the importance of reparations and decolonization in dismantling the structures of foreign domination and systems of oppression.\n\n For Palestinians\, this involves confronting the continuation and consequences of root causes of the Ongoing Nakba: Israeli forced displacement and transfer\, colonization\, apartheid and genocide. For South Africans who are living a ‘post-apartheid’ reality  characterised by a lack of reparations and sustainable social reconciliation\, there continue to be ongoing efforts working to redress the issues around what true reconciliation and justice should look like.  \nJoin BADIL\, Makan & the South Africa Human Rights Commission for an upcoming webinar that aims to provide a space to educate participants on the ongoing Nakba and the process of dismantling apartheid and reparations in South Africa; examine the legal\, political\, and moral foundations for reparations; discuss the South African case as a precedent\, highlighting its achievements and failures; and explore strategies for advocacy\, accountability\, and global solidarity in advancing reparations. \nAbout Tshepo Madlingozi \nTshepo is the Commissioner of the South Africa Human Rights Commission.  \nTrained in law and sociology\, he is a scholar-activist whose work focuses on decolonization\, reparative justice\, human rights\, and participatory democracy. In 2024\, the President of South Africa appointed Madlingozi as a full-time Commissioner at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)\, an independent constitutional body. At the SAHRC\, he is responsible for the Anti-racism\, Education\, and Equality key areas. \nAbout Lubnah Shomali \nLubnah is a Palestinian activist and has worked with BADIL since 2012. She aims to advance a rights-based decolonial framework and solution for Palestine\, centering the Palestinian people’s inalienable rights to self-determination and return\, and is responsible for BADIL’s donor relations\, fund development\, and legal and international advocacy. \nAbout BADIL  \nBADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights is an independent\, human rights non-profit organization committed to defend and promote the rights of Palestinian refugees and internally displaced persons. Our vision\, mission\, programs and relationships are defined by our Palestinian identity and the principles of international humanitarian and human rights law. We seek to advance the individual and collective rights of the Palestinian people on this basis.

SUMMARY:Palestine\, Brazil & South Africa: Contending with Christian Zionism’s disruption of South to South Solidarities: A conversation with Isabela Agostinelli and Fathi Nimer
DESCRIPTION:Book your place today by registering here \nJoin Al-Shabaka & Makan’s upcoming conversation with Isabela Agostinelli and Fathi Nimer\, who will provide a comparative analysis of the mobilisation of Christian Zionism across Brazil and South Africa historically and today. The discussion will delve into the ways in which this transnational movement is being deployed across the global south and how to build more robust south to south solidarities. \nThere is often a misconception that peoples across the Global South are inherently on the side of the Palestinian liberation movement. This not only flattens and homogenises the complex histories of south-south solidarity\, it erases the history and development of Christian Zionism and its impact on global majority relationships. In recent years\, Israel and the United States have systematically disrupted global south solidarity with Palestinians by mobilising Christian Zionism across civil societies institutions\, particularly in the cases of Brazil and South Africa.  \nWednesday 17th June on Zoom at 5pm – 6.15pm (London time) \nAbout Isabela Agostinelli  \nIsabela Agostinelli is the Professor of International Relations at Fundação Escola de Comércio Álvares Penteado (FECAP)\, São Paulo\, Brazil. She is a researcher at the International Conflict Studies Group (GECI) at PUC-SP and the National Institute of Science and Technology for United States Studies (INCT-INEU). She holds a PhD in International Relations from the San Tiago Dantas Graduate Program (UNESP\, UNICAMP\, PUC-SP). Her research focuses on Palestine Studies with an emphasis on the Gaza Strip; United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East\, with a focus on the Gulf.   \nAbout Fathi Nimer \nFathi is Al-Shabaka’s Palestine policy fellow. He previously worked as a research associate with the Arab World for Research and Development\, a teaching fellow at Birzeit University\, and a program officer with the Ramallah Center for Human Rights Studies. Fathi holds a master’s degree in political science from Heidelberg University and is the co-founder of DecolonizePalestine.com\, a knowledge repository for the Palestinian question. Fathi’s research revolves around political economy and contentious politics. His current focus is on food sovereignty\, agroecology\, and the resistance economy in Palestine. \nAbout Al Shabaka: \nAl-Shabaka\, The Palestinian Policy Network\, is an independent\, non-partisan\, and non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and foster public debate on Palestinian human rights and self-determination within the framework of international law. Al-Shabaka\, which means “The Network\,” is a think tank without borders or walls that aims to: \n\nDraw upon the vast knowledge and experience of the Palestinian people\, whether under occupation\, in exile\, or in Israel\, so as to engage the broadest spectrum of perspectives in debate on policy and strategy.\n\n\nCommunicate ideas and strategies on resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict to Palestinian communities as well as to Arab and other policy communities and interested parties worldwide\n\nAbout Makan: \nMakan is an independent\, non-partisan organisation dedicated to interconnected learning.
