SUMMARY:Reframing Normal: Disability\, Dehumanisation\, and Solidarity with Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Makan and Diversity & Ability present: ‘Reframing Normal: Disability\, Dehumanisation\, and Solidarity with Palestine’. Join us as explore how disability and debility configure into the collective Palestinian experience\, and how disability justice is at the core of Palestinian liberation\, especially amidst the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Whether or not Palestinians self-identify as Disabled according to Western definitions\, there is no doubt that all Palestinians\, in Gaza and beyond\, live under violent\, debilitating conditions. Yet disability justice is rarely part of the mainstream conversation on Palestinian liberation. Equally\, Western disability rights and inclusion frameworks don’t sufficiently meet the needs of the Palestinian people\, often rendering conversations about Palestine and disability into depoliticised\, humanitarian frameworks. In this context\, what does useful\, informed solidarity look like? How are decolonisation and disability justice related? What is a useful way to build frameworks and practices that anchor our understanding of Palestinian liberation in an anti-colonial disability politics? \n  \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Thinking about the future at a time of Nakba reoccurring
DESCRIPTION:Makan Outreach & Programmes Manager\, Saron Bedwan\, will be a panel member at this event organised by the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES) to discuss how we can imagine a future in a time of genocide and ongoing Nakba. In the webinar\, the speakers challenge the ongoing desecration of Palestinian lives and ponder Palestinian futurity beyond war rhetoric. They read Palestine as a praxis of wujud (presence) and memory-making that imagines liberation as a praxis of building bridges and taking place. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Practicing Freedom in a Time of Crisis: Political Education\, Movement Building and Accountability’ with Resist + Renew
DESCRIPTION:As genocide and ethnic cleansing continue to unfold in Palestine\, everywhere around us a narrative war is taking place\, while a campaign to silence voices calling for a ceasefire has gone into overdrive. The need to speak up for freedom\, justice and equality has never been more acute or challenging. Friendships and working relationships are rupturing as a deep-set breach in values and beliefs is revealed\, resulting in painful feelings of alienation and even betrayal with those close to us. In such a defining moment\, we are starkly reminded not only of the importance and necessity of mobilising\, but of the centrality of political education in working towards change.\n\n\n \n\n\nIn our first virtual talk of 2024\, we aim to explore the fraught process of political education in our wider and immediate surroundings since October\, and in movement-building at large. How can we guide each other through the necessary pain that arises with a developing political consciousness\, of moving people from one political point of view to another? And how do we navigate the emotional and radically intimate terrains of trying to collectively learn to build a world rooted in a long-term vision of liberation?\n\n\n \n\n\nResist + Renew is a facilitation collective developing and holding participatory workshops\, courses and spaces for groups working towards social justice and collective liberation. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe talk will be facilitated by Kelsey (they/them) from Resist + Renew. The speakers will include Sami (she/her) from R+R\, and Aimee Shalan (she/her)\, Director of Makan.\n\n\n\n  \nRegister for the talk here! \n\n\n
