Tuesday 28 April 2020 – 5.30pm UK time (12.30pm EST / 7.30pm Palestine time)

Speakers:

Nadim Nashif - Executive Director and co-founder of 7amleh - The Arab Center for Social Media Advancement

Alex Kane - Intercept writer and freelance journalist

The COVID-19 pandemic has been deemed the most exceptional global event we have seen for generations. This talk will explore how the pandemic only heightens the state of emergency and surveillance policies that Palestinians have already been living under for the past 70 years. The talk will go on to look at how governments around the world have granted themselves access to the digital lives of millions of people, and how these measures only expose the necessity of protecting people’s rights in times of emergency and in the aftermath of COVID-19.

Nadim Nashif is a social entrepreneur and digital rights defender. He is also the founder and executive director of 7amleh - The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, a Palestinian digital rights organization, and co-founder of Wusul Digital Academy, a digital marketing educational center. For the past 20 years, he has worked on youth and community development issues including founding and directing Baladna, The Association for Arab Youth.

Alex Kane is an independent journalist who focuses on Palestine-Israel, the politics of Palestine in the U.S., and civil liberties. His work has appeared in The Intercept, VICE, +972 Magazine, Jewish Currents and more.
